The Value of Life

The recent shootings have brought a call for the banning of Assault Weapons, Guns, and or Ammunition. I am a firm believer in the 2nd Amendment and yet I see pros and cons to both sides of this argument. I personally would rather not own a gun. This insane society we are devolving into has made that choice moot. A shotgun and a handgun should be good enough for basic home defense. Hell, a sword and a club will work in most instances. I don't want the bad Karma of killing anybody, period. And looking at an assault rifle you have to make the conclusion that is what they are made   for. But the 2nd Amendment was written to overthrow an oppressive Government, not just for target practice or hunting. The thing is, I doubt bump stocks or fully automatic weapons will help hold off a US military used by a maniacal dictator against his/her own people. Yet it is a bill of rights not a bill of needs.
 I believe the solution to all this madness is valuing the lives of others, all others, including animals. It sounds simplistic and naive, I know. And when people like Devin Kelley personify an evil that is incomprehensible to most people we have to realize we will never reach everybody. The Balkanization of our Society has caused many to view opposite opinions as less than human. If minds cannot form an agreement someone has to be inferior.
We must lock up the insane for their own benefit, and maybe a National Review Board/ Database so background checks can be uniform will help. I know that criminals will find ways to skirt all Laws, but everything that will make it more difficult will possibly save a life. Maybe we could have a flag raised when someone who does not pass a background check on an assault weapon so dots can be connected on who these troubled people are and for what reason do they want this kind of weaponry. The cost could be passed on through the purchasing of guns and ammunition, if someone feels the desire to own such weapons they can help bear the cost these weapons bring to society.
In a free society everyone has some responsibility, if something is seen that is not right, speak up.
